Clay and Nature
Embossed Surface/ Handbuilt Form
Want to become a better hand builder? Let’s take a deep dive...
During this weeklong workshop we will explore simple and complex form, (mugs, bowls, vases, pitchers and lidded vessels), using soft slab construction techniques such as cutting, darting, stretching, and the use of coils. We will learn how to make coil handles and a variety of spouts. Slab construction is such a delightful way to make pots!
Using embossing plates, the surfaces will be embellished to create three dimensional plant imagery on the surface of the clay. Creating a raised relief surface can make surfaces sing. Then, we will learn how to make our own embossing plates using plants growing in this magnificent area.
In and around making pots we will also discuss functional and aesthetic considerations related to form, processing pots through the kiln, how to inlay oxides, as well as glazing tips and techniques.
And we will be working in one of the most beautiful places on earth; could it get any better?
Christy will be doing a One Day Demo Only Workshop on March 1 (see description above) This day is optional but included in your workshop. Please plan to come if you can!

Explore new ways of creative thinking and expand your artistic approach in this three day workshop developed to guide students to create with intention throughout their creative process. We’ll cover a handful of topics intentionally selected to ensure all experience levels and types of making will find what they need to grow in their artistic pursuits, from functional to sculptural – wheel throwers or hand builders alike.
Using inspiration as a starting point we’ll look at three primary sources of inspiration; visual, written, lived, and discuss where and how to find inspiration that is meaningful to you. We’ll investigate these inspirations and learn how to turn them into creative intention through customizable drawing, writing, and collage exercises. Then, through distinct demonstrations you'll gain a full spectrum of skills to turn your creative intentions into creative actions.Students can expect to learn how to build with bisque molds (using coil, slab, and the wheel!), design and map out surface choices (glaze, slip, carving, etc.) at various stages of their making process, and break outside their artistic comfort zone through group discussions, creative exercises, and one on one instructor conversations.

She was a long-term Resident Artist at the Carbondale Clay Center from 2017-2019, and throughout her studio career has taught workshops, continuing education, and academic courses in both Art and Art History across the United States. Stephanie currently a Resident Artist at Studio and as Education Manager for The Archie Bray Foundation for the ceramic arts.
Casey + Gail have attended workshops in the US and abroad and have seen their own work quickly evolve through studying with a variety of teachers. Traveling to Anderson Ranch Art Center in the mountains of CO, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, La Meridiana International School of Ceramics in Tuscany....has inspired them create a visiting artist program at St John VI Pottery Inc.
This evolving program brings new inspiration to our small island and it has proven to be essential part of our studio. Visiting artist workshops help bring new life to our fellow Virgin Islands potters who live in this beautiful but somewhat remote little island. As this program progresses we get more and more stateside artists who are interested in combining a Caribbean vacation with a hands-on pottery workshop.
